Wisconsin and tax credits

If a Wisconsin taxpayer claims the standard deduction on his or her federal return, they must also claim the standard deduction on their state return. In the state of Wisconsin, the standard deduction amount fluctuates based on income level and filing status. Once a taxpayer’s income reaches a certain level, the standard deduction is eliminated.

There are many types of tax credits available for Wisconsin taxpayers. For example, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is available for qualifying taxpayers who also claimed it on their federal return. However, unlike the federal credit, those without children do not qualify for the Wisconsin EITC. The Wisconsin EITC is worth anywhere from 4% to 34% of the federal credit depending on the number of qualifying children you have.
