Note: It can take at least three weeks to process your Indiana refund for returns filed electronically and 12 weeks for returns filed on paper. Additionally, your bank may take up to seven days to deposit your refund into your account.

Indiana State income tax filing deadlines 2025

The State of Indiana government has issued the following guidance concerning income tax filing deadlines and extensions:

  • The state tax filing due date for 2024 Indiana income tax returns is April 15, 2025.
  • Qualifying taxpayers who file and pay by this date not be subject to late filing or underpayment penalties. Interest on unpaid taxes, however, will accrue starting April 16, 2025.
  • If you need extra time to file your Indiana state tax return, you can request an extension of time to file before the tax deadline. Note that if you have a federal extension of time to file, you automatically receive an extension of time to file your Indiana return. However, you don’t need to request a federal extension to request on Indiana tax extension.

Indiana tax brackets

Indiana leverages a flat rate tax of 3.05% on its taxpayers for 2024 (down from (3.15% in 2023). That flat rate applies to all tax filers regardless of filing status.

Indiana tax changes

Indiana’s flat tax rate is set to slowly decrease over the next few years, dropping to 3% for tax year 2025, 2.95% for tax year 2026, and 2.9% for tax year 2027.

Indiana county income tax and deductions

Each of Indiana’s 92 counties levies its own income tax, which ranges from 0.01 to 3.38%. Both residents and non-residents are subject to the tax. See the individual income county tax rates by year in Indiana.

Unfortunately, taxpayers in the state of Indiana cannot claim the standard deduction on their state income tax return. They can, however, claim itemized deductions such as mileage reimbursement. Several types of are also available for residents. For instance, taxpayers who donated to an Indiana University or College can claim a credit of $100 or half the amount donated — whichever is less. The credit limit for joint returns is $200.
