Maine tax brackets
Maine’s taxpayers who earn income are subject to a graduated tax rate on their earnings. While the tax rates remain the same across all filing statuses, the income ranges do not. Here are the tax brackets for 2024:
| Taxable Income – Single or Married Filing Separately | Taxable Income – Married Filing Jointly or Surviving Spouse | Taxable Income – Head of Household | Tax Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Less than $26,800 | Less than $53,600 | Less than $40,200 | 5.8% |
| $26,800-$63,449 | $53,600-$126,899 | $40,200-$95,149 | 6.75% |
| $63,450 or more | $126,900 or more | $95,150 or more | 7.15% |

Maine state tax deductions and personal exemption
Some of the available deductions and taxable income brackets in the state of Maine are similar to the federal tax system. However, while Social Security benefits are taxed by the federal government, Social Security income is exempt from Maine’s state income tax. This means taxpayers in Maine can subtract those amounts from their federal adjusted gross income (AGI) to calculate their taxable income in the state.
Taxpayers in the state of Maine can itemize deductions on their tax returns. However, the state limits the amount a taxpayer can itemize to $36,300 (not including medical and dental expenses). Additionally, taxpayers in Maine can claim the standard deduction if it is higher in value than their total itemized deductions. The standard deduction in Maine is the same as the federal standard deduction. However, the Maine standard deduction amounts are phased out for single filers if their Maine income exceeds $100,000 ($200,050 for married taxpayers filing joint returns).
The tax year 2025 Maine personal exemption is $5,150 per person.
The Sales Tax Fairness and Property Tax Fairness credits are also available to low-income taxpayers. Those who qualify can get a credit for a portion of the amount they paid in sales tax, property tax, or rent during the year.
