North Dakota Taxable Income

North Dakota taxpayers have the luxury of subtracting many forms of income from their federal adjusted gross income to calculate their taxable income in the state. Several types of income and gains taxed by the federal government are not taxable by the state of North Dakota. For instance, contributions to North Dakota College SAVE accounts can be subtracted as well as U.S. government obligations like savings bonds.

Ironically, while North Dakota allows its taxpayers to exclude a variety of income from their total taxable income, the state does tax social security benefits. It’s one of the few states that consider that type of income to be taxable.
