Solutions to Make Better Decisions with Your Taxes and Money

3 things to know about our Price Lock Guarantee

3 things to know about our Price Lock Guarantee - TaxAct Blog

At TaxAct, we believe in pricing transparency. Our goal is to ensure every customer knows upfront what they’ll pay to file their taxes.

One important way we make that happen is by offering a Price Lock Guarantee on any of our online tax filing products.

To help you better understand how it works, here are the top three things to know.

1. This guarantee is not available everywhere.

We pride ourselves on being one of the only major online tax software providers to offer a Price Lock Guarantee.

As a company, we’re committed to moving away from the bait and switch tactics many of our competitors use.  We don’t like hidden fees or obscure upgrades. And we certainly don’t think you should start your income tax return based on the promise of one price – only to find you have to pay more when you file later.

That’s why we let you lock in your price and keep that price regardless of how much time you need to complete and file your return.

2. Your “locked” price will never change.

Our Price Lock Guarantee works exactly as it sounds – and it doesn’t matter which of our online products you choose.

The price listed at the time you start your return will be the price you pay for that product when you file – even if that ends up being three months later.

We understand your life is busy. And sometimes you don’t get to finish what you started when you want to. That’s true when it comes to finishing your taxes too.

Even if you have the best intention of finishing your return in one fell swoop, sometimes something unexpected pulls you away – or maybe you realize you’re still waiting to receive important tax documents.

Whatever the case, we don’t think you should pay higher prices just because you wait a little while before you file.

With TaxAct Online, whenever you’re ready to sign back in, the price will look exactly the same as the day you registered.

We like to keep things simple – even in a world where most things aren’t.

3. Free is free.

The Price Lock Guarantee extends to every online product – even if your price is $0.

If you choose our Free Online Edition and start your return at the beginning of tax season, but don’t finish until closer to the filing deadline, you’ll still pay nothing to e-file and print your simple federal and state tax returns.

As long as you lock in free by starting your online return, you’ll stay free.

Does it get any better than that?

TaxAct makes preparing and filing your taxes quick, easy and affordable so you get your maximum refund. It’s the best deal in tax. Start free now or sign into your TaxAct Account.

  1. Weston White says:

I have been using Tax Act for years and have always bought the Deluxe version in order to upload data from the previous year. What version must I now buy to do that? I don’t see a $12.95 Deluxe version listed.

  2. Larry W Marlow says:

I want to get the Online Price guarantee but I am waiting on more information before I can begin my returns. How much time do I have before filing?

    • Hi Larry! You can start your Online return and lock in the price available at that time whenever you want! That’s the beauty of our Price Lock Guarantee – no matter when you start your Online return, the price listed will remain even if you wait to file weeks later. Keep in mind, the tax return filing deadline is April 18, 2017. Thank you!

  3. Barry Goldberg says:

I initially locked in the Plus price guarantee the first day your 30% savings deal came out. Then, I got an email saying I would be able to take advantage of a zero cost fed and zero cost state return, which I also locked in. I still retain both emails. Am I paying or not paying?

  4. I do taxes with my mom & my son. So we file 3 returns. I need to lock in for same price for all of us. Not just one return. How can I do this?

    • Hi Lisa! If you are using any of our Online products you will need to start a new return for each of the returns you would like to e-file and pay separate fees. If you start each return at the same time you will be able to lock in the same price for each. You do not have to complete each return at the same time – that’s the beauty of our Price Lock Guarantee. Whatever price is listed at the time you start your Online returns will be there even if you file later. Thank you!

  5. Steve Martof says:

I would pay extra for the way TaxAct lets me put in my data. The competitors (I’ve tried them all) would not let me input the data the way I wanted to. The thing is, TaxAct is actually cheaper.
Thank You, from a Loyal User.

    • Thanks, Steve! That’s awesome to hear! We’re glad you’re happy with the experience and truly appreciate your loyalty!

  6. Richard L Jeffcoat says:

I make my income from South Carolina but I live in North Carolina. I have not filed a NC State Income form since 2011 because I have not earned any income in the state of NC. Was notified by NC Department of Revenue that I owe back taxes for 2012 & 2013. Have settled those yrs and also 2014 & 2015. If I use Tax Act On Line will they figure both States even though I don’t receive a W2 from NC?

    • Hi Richard, Yes we support every state that has income tax. All you have to do is add a state return for the states you need to file in when you get into your TaxAct account. Thanks!

  7. Robert Peake says:

I have been filing taxes for my son, daughter, and in-laws, as well as myself. Can I get the price locked for all of these, or just my own taxes.

    • Hi Robert! As long as you start a new Online return for each of the returns you need to file at the same time, you can lock in the price offered. The beauty of our Price Lock Guarantee is that you do not have to complete each return at that time. The price available at the time you start your Online return will be there even if you wait to file one or all of them later. Thank you!

  8. I locked in the price a couple months ago and was surprised that the pricing for the 2016 taxes have really changed. At first I was pleased that the federal price seemed normal, but was annoyed that the state price seemed to be hidden and had jumped quite a bit. I sent feedback inquiring about the hidden increase, but did not receive a response. Instead of just going with TaxAct this year, I will be shopping around for a better deal.

    • Hi Mark! Maybe it was because of your suggestion, but we have added the state price to our homepage so it is visible to all customers. We definitely want our pricing to be as transparent as possible, so we were happy to do that. We hope you still consider using TaxAct as we’re happy to be significantly less in price compared to our competitors. Please let us know if you have any questions about the product that is best for your tax situation. Thank you!

  9. I am a happy long-time user of TaxAct and recommended it to many people. I was taken by surprise by a recent email from TaxAct. It had three options to choose from and had very sketchy information about each. The middle option seemed to be the right one at the time. Since then, I have been wondering if I should have chosen the most expensive option (Premium, I believe) instead. Asking us to make a choice early on based on limited information does not seem to be a good way. I hope I will have a chance to change it at a later time.

    • Hi Tamer! You definitely have the ability to upgrade within the product as you go through your return if it is needed. So don’t worry about not being able to complete your return like you need to, we will let you know if you need to switch to the Premium product as you go through your return. Thank you!

  10. My locked-in price inexplicably increased two, weeks, ago. Support said they are working to restore my price, but the silence has been deafening, despite a recent inquiry from me. What gives?

  11. John Stacey says:

I love TaxAct and have used it for “many many” years but I don’t love the almost 100% increase in price. Why so “very very” much??

    • Hi John, Thanks for the kind words about our software – we definitely appreciate you being a long-time customer! We also understand news of a price increase isn’t what you expected from us this year, and we’re sorry for the unwelcome surprise. To be honest, we’re doing things a little differently in an attempt to provide more pricing transparency. Instead of including hidden fees and obscure upgrades within the products – a game some of our major competitors play – we are working to show you everything you’ll pay up front. This way, you won’t be surprised by any extra fees that pop up, raising the price you eventually pay. Also, the price you lock in now is still a fraction of the price you’ll pay for a comparable product from our major competitors. We hope you’ll stick with us this year and continue to trust us to help you file your taxes. If you ever have any questions or want help figuring out which product is right for your tax situation, please feel free to let us know! Thank you!

  12. I tried to enter the basic information on the 2016 on-line Tax Act, but if I exited the program and signed back on the information previously entered was not saved. Is the “save” feature only operative after 1/1/2017?

  13. Michael W. Hill says:

Is a reduced fee for standard 2016 returns still available? Have I missed the deadline?

    • Hi Michael! You can check out all of our products and pricing on our website here, including our Online Free Edition. If you happen to have any questions about which product best fits your tax situation, feel free to contact our customer support team. They’ll be happy to help you out! Thanks!

  14. I’ve been using TaxAct for years and plan to continue doing so. One thing I’ve found confusing in the past is your pricing for state returns when they’re filed in conjunction with a federal return for which I’ve opted to pay for the premium federal return. Is the price of ONE state return included, or is it extra? And how much does the state return cost? Maybe it’s just me, but due to my confusion on this point, I’m never really sure what the final cost is going to be. You might want to look for ways to make it a little clearer. Thanks for the opportunity for feedback. You don’t really need to publish this on your webpage. (In any case, you’re stuck with me as a user. :-) )

    • Hi Dave! Thank you for being a loyal customer! We appreciate your feedback and always welcome any suggestions you have. To answer your question, a state return is an additional fee with our Plus and Premium Online editions. Our Free Online Edition allows you to file one Federal Form 1040EZ or 1040A and one state return for free. If you purchase a Download/Desktop Edition, one state return is included in our Plus and Premium Editions, however you will have to pay an additional fee to e-file it. For the Free Download Edition, you will have to pay an extra fee for a state return. We will definitely continue to work on making this as clear as possible. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact our Customer Support Center, and they will be happy to help! And don’t worry – we’re very happy to be stuck with you! Thank you!

  15. Seems strange that when I went to file my 2015 taxes last week that was not the case. When I entered my information there was a package deal that included state returns. Access was denied and the price was now $24.95 each for Fed and for each of 2 state returns. I called customer support and was told no deals were available so I paid the Fed 24.95 to get access and print and mail my return to get my refund. Where was that guarantee?

    • Hi Allan, The Price Lock Guarantee only applies to the products for the current tax year, which is why it was not available when you purchased a product for TY15. If you have any other questions regarding billing or selecting a product for TY 2016, our customer support team is always happy to help. Thank you!

  16. What is the main different from the Desktop and Online programs ?

    • Hi David! There is no difference in how the product works or in any of its features between the Desktop and Online versions. However, with the Desktop version, you can’t e-file your return, so you will have to send your return to the IRS in the mail. Also, as mentioned in the post, our Price Lock Guarantee only applies to our Online products as with our Desktop/Download versions you have to pay for the product prior to starting your return. If you choose the Online route, you’ll pay once you’ve completed your return and are ready to file. If you have any other questions about our products, feel free to ask! Thank you!
