2020 Tax Deadline Extended

On March 17, it was announced that the tax deadline to file individual federal income tax returns has been extended to May 17, 2021. This gives filers an extra 32 days to complete and file their tax returns without being subject to late filing penalties. The IRS has also issued a tax deadline extension to June 15, 2021 for residents of Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Important details to know:

  • You do not need extra forms: You do not need to file a tax extension to take advantage of the new deadline. The IRS will automatically waive all interest and penalties. Note: If you need additional time beyond May 17 to file your return, you still need to file an extension.
  • State deadlines vary: State deadlines are not automatically adjusted because of t
    his extension, but it is likely that most states will change the state filing deadline. TaxAct is currently reviewingall states and will have updates as changes occur.

    • Alabama has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Alaska has extended its tax deadline for corporate income taxes to June 16, 2021. Alaska does not have a state income tax for individuals.
    • Arizona has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Arkansas has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • California has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Colorado has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Connecticut has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Delaware has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Georgia has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Hawaii has decided to not extend its tax filing deadline. State tax returns for Hawaii residents are due April 20, 2021.
    • Idaho has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Illinois has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Indiana has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Iowa has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to June 1, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Kansas has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Kentucky has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021. The IRS has granted a tax deadline extension to June 30, 2021 to various counties affected by recent disasters.
    • Louisiana has extended its tax deadline for individuals and businesses to June 15, 2021. This extension includes payments originally due on or after February 11, 2021 and before June 14, 2021. The federal tax deadline for Louisiana residents has been extended to June 15, 2021.
    • Maine has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Maryland has extended its tax deadline for individuals and businesses from April 15, 2021 to July 15, 2021.
    • Massachusetts has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Michigan has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Minnesota has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
    • Mississippi has extended its tax deadline for individuals from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This extension does not cover business tax returns or estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
