No State Income Tax in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of the seven states in the United States that does not impose an income tax on individual wages and salaries. However, all dividends and interest income earned from is taxed. Therefore, if you make money through either of those avenues, you must file a New Hampshire state income tax return. Taxpayers who have not earned income aside from their general wages do not need to file.  Dividend and interest income is taxed at a flat rate of 5 percent regardless of filing status or business structure.

For those who have to file and pay tax on their income, there is a standard personal exemption available. For single filers it’s $2,400 and for filing jointly filers it’s $4,800. That means even if a taxpayer makes income from interest and dividends, they do not have to pay taxes on the amount earned if it’s below the personal exemption amount for their filing status. If their earnings are above the personal exemption amount, they must pay 5 percent on the amount that exceeds that limit.

Additionally, taxpayers who are age 65 or older, blind or younger than 65 but disabled and unable to work can claim a second personal exemption of $1,200.
