Massachusetts State Tax Brackets
The state of Massachusetts leverages a flat income tax rate of 5% on personal income under $1,000,000, meaning the tax rate remains the same for all filers regardless of tax filing status or income level under that amount.
However, Massachusetts imposes an 8.5% tax on short-term capital gains, a 12% tax on collectibles, and a 3% tax on certain investments in startup companies. Additionally, as of 2023, the state imposes another 4% surtax (9% total) on the portion of a taxpayer’s annual income exceeding $1,000,000
Massachusetts Tax Deductions and Exemptions
Residents of Massachusetts cannot claim a standard deduction on their state income tax return.
Childcare expenses may be deductible on the state return along with college tuition if the cost is more than 25% of a taxpayer’s state-adjusted gross income. Taxpayers can also claim deductions for their rental and student loan payments. Personal exemptions are also available to Massachusetts state residents. The amount available to taxpayers for a personal exemption depends on their tax filing status:
Filer Type | Exemption |
