Missouri tax deductions
The main objective of a tax deduction is to lower your tax rate and taxable income. The amount of your Missouri state tax refund also depends on the number of tax deductions taken.
Taxpayers in Missouri can claim a standard deduction as long as they don’t itemize their deductions on their federal tax return. Missouri’s standard deduction amounts are equal to the federal standard deduction amounts. In 2024, single filers and those married filing separately can claim a standard deduction of $15,750 on their state returns. The standard deduction for joint filers and qualifying surviving spouses is exactly double that at $31,500. Individuals filing as head of household can claim a standard deduction of $23,625. Taxpayers over the age of 65 or those who are blind are eligible to claim a larger standard deduction.
