Maine State Tax Deductions
Some of the available deductions and taxable income brackets in the state of Maine are similar to the federal tax system. However, while Social Security benefits are taxed by the federal government, taxpayers in Maine can subtract those amounts from their federal adjusted gross income (AGI) to calculate their taxable income in the state.
Taxpayers in the state of Maine can itemize deductions on their tax returns. However, the state limits the amount a taxpayer can itemize to $28,350 except medical expenses. Additionally, taxpayers in Maine can claim the standard deduction if it is higher in value than their total itemized deductions. The standard deduction in Maine is not the same as the federal standard deduction.
The Sales Tax Fairness and Property Tax Fairness credits are also available to low-income taxpayers. It allows those who qualify to get a credit for a portion of the amount they paid in sales tax and property tax or rent during the year.
