FAQs

Alabama state income tax brackets

Understanding your state income tax can be challenging, especially if your tax situation is complex. Taxpayers in Alabama must follow a progressive tax system when paying their taxes, meaning low-income earners are subject to a much smaller state income tax rate than individuals with higher incomes. For single tax filers and married couples filing jointly, the tax brackets look like this.

Tax RateSingleMarried filing jointly
2%Up to $500Up to $1,000
4%$501-$3,000$1,001-$6,000
5%Above $3,000Above $6,000

Alabama tax deductions

The standard deduction for taxpayers in Alabama matches the federal standard deduction and depends on your filing status. The amount available also phases out based on adjusted gross income levels.

Alabama residents can also claim a $1,500 personal exemption on their tax return if they are primarily responsible for their own financial support (joint and head of family statuses can claim $3,000). A $300 dependent exemption is also available.
