Louisiana Tax Brackets
All taxpayers that are full-time or part-time Louisiana residents, as well as all nonresidents that earn income in the state, must file a state income tax return if they are required to file a federal return. The tax brackets based on filing status for the state of Louisiana are as follows:
Taxable Income - Single/Married Filing Separately/Head of Household | Taxable Income - Married Filing Jointly | Tax Rates |
---|---|---|
$0+ | $0+ | 1.85% |
$12,500+ | $25,000 | 3.5% |
$50,000+ | $100,000+ | 4.25% |
Louisiana Exempt Income
The state of Louisiana allows taxpayers to subtract several types of income from their federal adjusted gross income (AGI) to determine their taxable income. For example, teachers’ retirement benefits and Louisiana state employees’ benefits are not taxable in the state. Additionally, up to $6,000 in retirement income and all Social Security income is not taxable. All of those income groups should be subtracted from the federal AGI.
Louisiana Tax Deductions and Exemptions
The values for personal exemptions and the standard deduction are combined for Louisiana residents. For single filers and those married filing separately the combined total is $4,500. Filers who are filing joint returns or as head of household can deduct a total of $9,000. An additional exemption of $1,000 is also available for each dependent.
Louisiana also lets taxpayers deduct the amount of their federal itemized deductions that is over the amount of the federal standard deduction from their adjusted gross income (AGI) to calculate their taxable income. Full-time and part-time residents can deduct school expenses incurred during their time living in the state. The deduction is limited to $5,000 in school expenses per dependent. Louisiana taxpayers can deduct school expenses for dependents claimed in both the current or prior year.
Both of those should be subtracted from the federal AGI.
