Married filing separately
Yes, if you and your spouse keep your finances separate, you can choose to file your taxes as “married filing separately”.
This option is actually a good idea if you have any questions about how your spouse does their taxes, and you don’t want to be liable for the tax bill. It’s also a good idea if a relationship is less than stable.
However, if you simply think it’s easier to file separate returns, you may want to reconsider. You may lose certain tax benefits by doing so.
In addition, if one of you makes substantially more income than the other, you are almost certainly paying more total tax separately than you would if you filed jointly.
