4 Frequently Asked TaxACT TaxPayer Support Questions

How do I amend my federal return?

First, be sure to PRINT a copy of the original return that you filed (this will be your only record of the return as it was when you filed it once you make the corrections for the amendment).

Next, you’ll need to modify/add/delete the information in your return that needs amending.

Make a note of each item you are changing and the reason for each change as you will need these notes to complete Form 1040XYou can do this one of two ways:

  1. make notes offline yourself or
  2. utilize the Bookmarks feature in TaxACT (see below). Please note the Bookmark information you enter will not be sent to the IRS. These notes are your personal references only.

Please note Form 1040X cannot be e-filed, as the IRS requires that amended returns be mailed.

Here are step-by-step instructions for how to amend your return:

  1. Sign in to TaxACT or start your desktop program..
  2. Click on the Filing tab, then Amend Federal Return.
  3. TaxACT will ask you easy questions and request that you enter the appropriate information to complete the amended return. At the end of the process you will be prompted to print Form 1040X, and the mailing address for the form will be provided (note that you may have already completed both Steps 1 and 2 that are listed on the screen Amended Return – Four Steps if you have followed all of the above instructions).

The amended return, Form 1040X, will need to be printed when completed and mailed to the IRS. Attach any accompanying documents that may be required.

Normal processing time for Forms 1040X is 8 to 12 weeks from the IRS receipt date. You can track your federal amended return using the IRS Where’s My Amended Return? tool.

Please note there is a one-time fee for accessing your TaxACT Online account after the electronic filing season for that year has ended.

How do I amend my state return?

  1. Sign in to TaxACT or start your desktop program. , Print a copy of your original federal and state returns. This can be done by clicking the Print link, then choosing Print Return and Instructions in the popup window that follows.
  2. Click on the State Q&A tab, then click on the applicable state name.
  3. Click Amended Return.
  4. TaxACT will ask you easy questions and request that you enter or review the appropriate information.

Please note there is a one-time fee for accessing your TaxACT Online account after the electronic filing season for that year has ended.

Where’s my refund?

You can check the status of your federal refund in 3 easy ways:

  1. IRS Where’s My Refund? website
  2. Tax Return Status, a free mobile app by TaxACT (download here)
  3. efstatus.taxact.com

Note that the IRS Where’s My Refund system updates every 24 hours (usually overnight), so there is no need to check the site more than once a day.

Once the IRS accepts your return, they do not provide TaxACT further information regarding when the refunds are mailed or direct deposited.

What You Need to Check Your Refund Status

When checking your refund status, have your federal tax return handy. To get your personalized refund information, you must enter:

  • The primary taxpayer’s Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
  • Your filing status
  • Exact whole dollar federal refund amount
